Holy Orders

Holy Orders: A Vocation of Service

“You did not choose Me, but I chose you.” – John 15:16

Holy Orders is both a vocation and a sacrament of service. Through this sacrament, the mission Jesus entrusted to His apostles continues in the Church until the end of time. It is the sacrament of apostolic ministry, by which certain men are set apart to serve the Church in Christ’s name.

All baptized believers share in the common priesthood through Baptism. However, through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, some are called to a distinct role of leadership and service—helping to make Christ present in a visible way in our communities through preaching, sacraments, and pastoral care.

The Three Degrees of Holy Orders

  1. Bishop – Receives the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders and is entrusted with teaching, governing, and sanctifying the faithful.

  2. Priest – Shares in the bishop’s apostolic ministry, particularly through preaching, celebrating the Eucharist, and offering pastoral care.

  3. Deacon – Ordained for service, the deacon assists in liturgical roles and dedicates himself to charity, word, and sacrament.

Each man ordained through the Rite of Ordination receives a permanent spiritual mark (character), signifying that he is configured to Christ in a unique way.

Prayer for Vocations

God our Father,
We thank You for calling men and women to serve in Your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, and consecrated persons.
Send Your Holy Spirit to help others respond generously and courageously to Your call.
May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth and young adults.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Amen.
