Anointing of the Sick

A Sacrament of Healing and Strength

The Anointing of the Sick is a sacred sacrament offered by the Church to those who are seriously ill, elderly, or preparing for surgery. Through the ministry of a priest, Jesus Himself brings comfort, peace, courage—and when it is God’s will, even physical healing.

More than anything, this sacrament offers spiritual healing: the grace of the Holy Spirit to strengthen the soul, bring peace in suffering, and unite the person more closely with Christ.

“Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.”
— James 5:14

What Are the Last Rites?

In moments when a loved one is actively dying, a priest may offer what is traditionally known as the “Last Rites.” This includes:

  • The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession)

  • The Anointing of the Sick

  • Holy Communion (referred to as Viaticum when received near death)

Depending on the medical condition of the person, some sacraments may be adapted or omitted.
